Indian racism & Dalit persecution by Hindus shock Hollywood
DR. KANCHA ILAIAH IN HOLLYWOOD

Hollywood directors, producers and world famous film personalities were shocked to hear from Indian Dalit leaders about rampant racism inside India and how it was worse than the South African Apartheid.

The occasion was a seminar held at Hollywood on Sept.14, 2005 by the Dalit Freedom Network (DFN), an American organisation working for Dalits which organised the meeting in collaboration with All-Indian Christian Council. Those present included noted producers, directors, actors, popular TV show anchors, script writers and documentary film-makers.

Though India was the largest colonial country, its cultural history is much less known. Hardly any major Hollywood intellectual seemed to know anything substantial about India. To make the issue communicable to an average Hollywood person, Ms. Nanci Ricks, the executive director of the DFN, made a brief presentation with the help of India's map on how India was a country of numerous castes.

Religious sanction: Many of those present did not know that there existed a system of untouchability that involved as many as 200 million people and that there was a tribal population of about 70 million were in India. Besides, these massive numbers there are about 500 million people suffering from caste discrimination based on work —constituting a category called "Other Backward Castes" (OBCs).

Joseph Desouza, the international president of DFN, said how the upper castes (Hindus) in the Indian society never felt guilt or shame about the caste system as it was sanctified by their Hindu religion. Though there have been numerous struggles by the low caste people, they have never been historicised.

He said hurricane Katrina exposed the conditions of the underdogs in US. But it was not well known that there are millions of perpetual underdogs in the Indian caste system.

He called for a global partnership to liberate the Indian underdogs and asked Hollywood to take interest in this process of liberation.

Joseph Desouza, a Karnataka Christian leader, has been campaigning on caste and untouchability over three years in global circles. It was he who was mainly responsible for the establishment of the DFN in which scores of American and European citizens are involved. His appeal to Hollywood certainly goes a long way in drawing the attention of the globally influential cultural centre. The Hollywood film industry makes films on Blacks of not only America but also of Africa. It makes films on Chinese and other Asian cultures — not just karate but also subjects like war-lordism. Why Hollywood did not make a single film on the caste culture and the horrendous practice that goes with it?

Not many realised the fact that the Dalit in Lagaan was not only lame but also mentally retarded. It was a sad presentation of a historically skillful community.

The opposition even to the social protest for including an Untouchable in the team was so weak that the superstition of the defeat caused by the presence of an Untouchable was also allowed to persist. This film rubs some salt into the wounds of the Untouchables.

Jews in films: The Hollywood film industry consists of quite a significant number of Jews whose presence is quite visible in the film city of Los Angeles dotted with synagogues. The Jews have experienced the Holocaust in Europe and they have a historical responsibility to understand the historical oppression of millions of people in South Asia. As producers and directors they perhaps would respond to the call that was given at the Hollywood seminar.

Interest shown: Interestingly several award-winning film personalities like Black actor-director Forest Whitaker and his wife Keisha evinced interest in visiting India to understand the Dalit question. The DFN team did a wonderful job by circulating a chapter on untouchability from noted columnist Thomas Friedman's recent book, The World is Flat. Friedman, himself a Jew, carries the baggage of the Holocaust with him. The conviction and credibility with which Friedman writes made many Americans think that this problem is serious enough to work on.

So far no global media concern has done focussed work on the Indian caste system and untouchability. If at all the Indian films presented the Dalit-OBC life in the films and documentaries it was only to show their historical inability. The Indian film industry and TV plays portrayed them as unworthy of becoming heroes and heroines. What the Dalit-OBCs need is a dignified and heroic presentation of their selves in the global media. The Dalit Freedom Network deserves praise for working towards the process of breaking such historical silence on untouchability and caste discrimination.

Valmiki dilemma on caste & religion

In a brand-new Valmiki mandir at Ludhiana, devotees flock to worship their Poet-Saint Valmiki who wrote the Ramayana. They also visit the Ram and Hanuman temples in the city but there is no statue of Valmiki.

Bhagwan Valmiki is associated with our caste. We are safai karamcharis. People know this and it's not that they have anything against Valmiki Maharaj, they don't want to have anything to do with us because of our caste. So this statue is never installed in a Ram mandir,

says Chowdhury Yashpal, manager, Ghativalmiki temple.

The Valmikis traditionally scavengers and still considered Untouchables even among the Dalits, earlier tried to stake their claim on the Ramayana and Hinduism by keeping names like Danav and Asur. But they now want to establish their own religion called Advaiti with its own gods, rituals and temples. And this process appears to have been hastened by the recent Gohana incident where an entire basti of Valmikis was gutted by the upper caste Jats in Haryana

After the incident not a single Hindu party, whether the Shiv Sena, RSS or BJP helped us. So why should we remain Hindu. We will establish our own religion and be known by that name, not Dalit,

said Dr. Devi Singh Asur, awriter of Sangrur.

But more difficult than adopting a new dharma will be breaking away from Hinduism. The Valmikis have traditionally identified themselves with Hinduism which believes in caste system. So, they can't give up the Ramayana and yet call themselves Valmiki, said Professor Surinder Jodhka, Dept. of Social Sciences, JNU.

Armed with a separate religion, they now want to assert their identity as Valmikis and not Dalits for economic gains. Ravidasis are involved in the leather trade and the business is flourishing. They studied, became officers and politicians and helped their caste. The Valmiki could not do the same. (NDTV).

Identity first, religion later

The Valmiki decision to quit Hinduism and establish their own religioin is a welcome development. The NDTV report from Ludhiana further confirms our theory that caste (identity) is more important than religion. The report is very significant as it reinforces our argument in our book on "caste identity".

In the chapter 8 of our book, Caste — A Nation Within the Nation, (Books for Change, 2004), did we not say that "Religion does not unite a people?" The Valmikis may say their Guru has written the epic Ramayana but the upper castes who own Hinduism don't care. The Ramayana is their property because it was manufactured by the vaidiks, after they killed Budhism, to fool the non-Hindu indigenous people and Hinduise (enslave) them. Both the Ramayana and Mahabharata are cock and bull stories, said Dr. Ambedkar. If this is correct even SaintValmiki may be a fictitious character. (Riddle of Rama & Krishna, DSA-1995). The Valmiki caste leadership should forget religion —whether Hindu, Budhist or any other —but concentrate on strengthening their caste identity. Once they succeed in this mission, everything else will follow. DV will be too glad to support the Valmikis.

The Valmiki case also proves our point that the "Scheduled Castes" to which the Valmikis belong are not one caste. A number of independent castes (ethnic identities) treated as Untouchables are put under a schedule and called Scheduled Castes — EDITOR.

Brahminical sex bomb to finish Dalit & Muslim leadership

Few days back when I was reading the book, Muslim Failure to See Through Brahminical Tricks, by Rajendra with a foreword by V.T. Rajshekar (DSA-2002, Rs.5), I was shocked to read the topic "Brahmin girls marry Muslims" (p.5). I never knew that Brahmins and upper castes gave their girls to their "enemies" to achieve their goals. This has been the good old game of Jews who gift their women and their virginity to kill their enemies (Muslims). Read Zionist Arthashastra, available in DV office (Rs. 50).

After reading Brother Rajendra's book, I looked all over India and found so many examples of Brahmin and other upper caste girls marrying high-ranking Dalits, BCs and Muslims and many elite Muslim girls marrying upper castes.

Following examples and its disastrous consequences are cited:

1. The eminent Dalit intellectual and Editor of Dalit Voice, V.T. Rajshekar, wrote in his book, Dialogue of Bhoodevatas (DSA-1993), that former Chief Minister of Kashmir Farooque Abdullah's father, Sheikh Abdullah, was also a son of Pandit Motilal Nehru, father of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. That was how Farooque Abdullah joined hands with the Hindu nazi govt. led by A.B. Vajpayee. His son, Omar Abdullah, was the Foreign Minister (State) in that regime. At the UN conference at Durban (South Africa) in 2002 against caste and race discrimination, Omar Abdullah as the head of the Indian Govt. delegation and spoke like a Hindu nazi. He said India had nothing like casteism (racism) —and harmed the Dalit cause.

In 2004, the daughter of Farooque Abdullah, Sairah (now Sairah Pilot) married a Hindu, Rajesh Pilot's Hindu son, Sachin Pilot. Farooque Abdullah's wife is a Christian. She was a nurse in his clinic in London. His son, Omar Abdullah, also married a Hindu, Kran Ram Singh's Hindu daughter.

2. Lok Janshakti Party chief and Union Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan's second wife is a Brahmin. It should be noted that he too has been a trusted friend of Hindu nazis and a first class betrayer.

3. The ex-MP of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Akbar Ahmad Dampy, belongs to the village of eminent Muslim scholar Allama Shibli Numani of Azamgarh, UP. He married a Hindu, and a former Miss India, Niana Balsawar. When he was the Congress candidate in the Assembly election (1996), he said in a speech that he had Hindu blood in his body (because his ancestors were Rajputs/Thakur who embraced Islam).

4. The Editor of an Urdu weekly, Nai Duniya, New Delhi, Shahid Siddiqui Ali, is a good Urdu Muslim journalist. When he writes on Muslim issues, he says there is no better Muslim in the whole world than himself. But his wife is a Brahmin and there are idols in his house to worship.

5. A noted journalist, Suhaib Ilyasi's wife is an upper caste. His father Maulana Jameel Ilyasi, a member of the Tablighi Jamat and head of Masjid Imams (Ayimma-e-Masajid), wants to handover control of the mosques to the govt.

6. A rich Muslim merchant, Salim's wife is also Hindu, niece of the former Deputy PM, L.K. Advani, the killer of thousands of innocent Muslims.

7. A niece of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Mrs. Najma Hepatullah, is a former Congress leader. Her daughter married a Hindu. Najma asked Muslims to vote for NDA-led by BJP in 2004 Assembly election.

8. M.J. Akbar is the editor of the Asian Age. His father embraced Islam leaving Hinduism. But M.J. Akbar married a Hindu woman and gave his children Hindu names.

9. A noted BBC Hindi journalist, Afzal Hussein, is married to a Hindu woman, Ritu Rajpoot.

11.The Brahmin Chief Minister of Delhi, Shiela Dikshit's daughter is married to a Muslim.

The Upper castes conspired to marry their girls to elite Dalits, BCs, Muslims. Beware of this dangerous Brahminical sex bomb and avoid falling into this trap. This is my advice to Muslim,Dalit and BC leadership.

BEWARE OF RESERVATIONWALAS
Dalits wasted 60 years waiting for Hindu mercy

The Constitution of India may say that all those who are not Muslim, Christian, Parsi etc. are Hindu. But the fact is the Hindus will not give their daughters to a Sikh, Dalit, Bodhi. They do not eat with Dalits. They do not like to stay in Dalit colonies. The concept of secularism established in the Constitution is only meant for the Govt. But the Hindu society is not bound to accept it. Hindus are a racist society.

It is time the Dalits, Sikhs and others demand amendment to Article 25 of the Constitution. The Sikhs are already on a warpath and at times they have been burning this Article demanding they may be excluded from the definition of Hindus. Some Sikh scholars have written books saying Sikhs are not Hindu. Such books are not banned. It means the govt. is also accepting these books and there are chances of Sikhs being excluded from Hindus. The Dalits and Bodhis must now assert.

India meant for Hindus only: The framers of the Constitution desired to establish that India was meant for Hindus because at that time Pakistan had already come into existence and that country was meant for Muslims. The Hindu "majority" at that time desired that all the Muslims should go to Pakistan. But some Muslims did not. But in spite of staying on, the Muslims could not acquire the same status which the Hindus could get in India. The Sikhs have also lost the status, prestige and place which they had prior to the "Punjab Episode."

As far as Dalits are concerned, they are still holding the same position which they had prior to partition. Despite reservations and other so-called facilities they could not promote their status in Hindu society.

Dalits going to Durban: The Hindus have consistently refused to accept the Dalits as their equals. That the Dalits were forced to go to the UN (at Durban) to plead that Hinduism's caste system is nothing but racism proves that the two are poles apart.

Dalits form about 1/4 of the total population of India. If they want a separate identity, they must get out of Hindu society. Only then they would become a recognised force on the political front and the chances to establish their rule in India would improve.

Instead of merging with Hindus and remaining as their slaves, they must establish their separate identity, existence, definition. Until they attain this they will get no status in this society. They have already wasted six decades begging for a position in Hindu society. Still they could not get equality with the Hindus. They have violated the dictates of their own Father, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.

The Hindus are including Dalits under Hindu— not out of love for Dalits but to enlarge the number of Hindus inside India and claim that the Hindus are an overwhelming majority, 85% of its population.

Left out century behind: To expect the Hindus to change their path is a daydream. Because this path had been with them from centuries together and this path had given them big profits and made them the ruling class. Even after half a century of "independence" and after the Constitution provided many safeguards and privileges, the Hindus refused to accept the constitutional directives. To expect the Hindu to have a change of heart is a waste of time.

The Hindu society has left behind the Dalits and is going ahead in great speed. That means the Dalits will be left at least one century behind the Hindus.

Anti-Dalit reservationwalas: The Dalits must note that all these bogus reservations are lollipops given only to a selected few. While selecting such people, the Hindus are careful to see that only such of them are taken who are capable of keeping the rest of the Dalit brothers as permanent slaves of Hindus. This "selected class" is more dangerous because it keeps the rest of Dalits as slaves.

So, the Dalits must, note that the reservationwalas are actually anti-Dalit. Reservationwalas have taken birth out of the Dalits but they are made to stand between the Dalits and the upper castes (Hindus). This class is more dangerous because it will never allow the Dalits to revolt against Hindus. A time will soon come when this newly created class (reservationwalas) shall prove more dangerous for the Dalits than the Hindus. They shall become a buffer class and shall never allow the "lower" Dalits to fight the Hindus.

The Ambedkarites among Dalits must realise this mistake and take stocks of these counter-revolutionaries from their own ranks. They are the products of Dr. Ambedkar's labour but they were also the first to betray Babasaheb. Beware of reservationwalas.

Periyar advocated conversion to Islam to get rid of Hindu slavery

Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy, to whom Dalit Voice has assigned the No.2 status after Babasaheb Ambedkar as the greatest revolutionary of "independent" India, was a great admirer of Muslims and Islam. It is true Periyar did not believe in any religion. However, he was also the bitterest critic of Hinduism. But Islam he liked. As India's greatest rationalist he found it close to his heart.Dalit Sahitya Akademy had published Periyar's speech, Salvation to Shudra Slavery (1986, pp.42, only photocopy available) with our Foreword in which he asked the shudras to embrace Islam to get rid of their slavery suffered under Hinduism. We are reproducing passages from a booklet, Periyar & Islam (Critical Quest, 2004 pp.32 Rs. 20) to answer our critics who always question the coverage we give in Dalit Voice to Muslims. The answer is found in the words of Periyar. That even Dr. Ambedkar was not anti-Muslim is brought out in Dr. Anand Teltumbde's book, Ambdkar on Muslims (2003, pp.100 Rs. 75, Vikas Adhyayan Kendra, Bombay).It is our oppressors, the Brahminical people, who are against Muslims and Islam. The greatness of Islam

The reason behind the hatred of the Hindus towards the Muslims today is their hatred of Islam itself. Because Islam is contrary to the Aryan religion (Hinduism), the Hindus (Aryans) hate Islam. It is contrary because Islam demolishes the very foundation of the Hindu religion. (p.15) The Brahmin has made us all enemies of Islam (p.17)

Indignant comrades. The Shudra-label will not go by merely consigning the Vedas, Shastras, Puranas and Ithihasas to fire. It will not again go by demolishing temples and breaking up idols. The Brahmin knows how to turn all these to his own advantage just as the way dosa is turned on the pan

HOW TO KILL HINDUISM

The shudra-tag will not go by merely calling oneself Dravidian. In today's context, it will not go even if you declare that you are not a Hindu. The Hindu religion will not disappear lightly. It is like a chameleon that won't die easily. To kill it, our own life span, why the life span of our grandchildren also is not enough. So what is possible within our own lifetime is, to move away form the Hindu religion.

Why such bitterness and anger at the mention of Islam? Be first clarified as to why such sweetness and satisfaction at the mention of Hindu. In the alternative, suggest a way to abolish in your own lifetime the contemptible shudra-tag. I have stated my thoughts, you state yours. Wasting time in endless argument and counter-argument and useless gossips, are we to die and leave our progeny also as shudra?

CRITICISING ISLAM HELPS BRAHMINS

If we so die, it will only profit the Brahmin for our progeny would offer him holy dates and worship him as divinity; and he would see to it that such a process would not end soon; instead he would bring about dissensions and riots among us. Therefore think, and please do so deeply and in anxiety. Moving away from the fanaticism of attachment to the Aryan religion, think from the position of attachment to self-respect; do not get provoked. If the issue is left without any thoughtful conclusion, Islam and Hinduism and the people of both the religions will clash in which the loss, beatings and death all are for the Dravidians only. The Brahmin not only will not lose anything but there is income in it for him, in the court of this world, fees and bribe and in that of the next, holy dates and other orthodox rituals. Through what else except these the Aryans today are living and maintaining themselves in such high status on the one hand and on the other have degraded us devising laws and Shastras, which condemn us as his slaves, progeny of his concubines. Therefore think once again. (p.18).

STRENGTH OF MUSLIMS

Aren't you ashamed? Is it fair? You write to me letters threatening that my suggestion to become Muslim has turned the youth against me. Whether right or wrong, since I am firm in my resolve, whatever is the consequence, even if it is death, I will endure and die without any complaint but with full mental satisfaction.

Rajagopalacharyar, the intellectual who having given up many good things of life is really labouring in public life in never-ceasing mental anxiety, all these men are celebrated by people now; but tomorrow or after several years when they will be no more, what else would they leave behind except own autobiographies in order to point out their achievement particularly on your behalf?

Raja Sir Annamalai has ten crores of rupees, Birla, forty cores, the Sultan of Hyderabad four hundred crores; Gandhi has publicity across the world and the Acharyar is known as the intellectual all over India, except for such fame and name what particular respect do they command? In the same way you think about your Hindu religion also. With the departure of the White man, what has changed for you? The actual debasement and the stumbling blocks, have they disappeared? Consider the Muslims, at the departure of the Whiteman, they got Pakistan, but for you there is only Shudrasthan. Therefore, if you listen to me, how much you stand to benefit, what greatness for your progeny and how much satisfaction for me. (p.20)

Until recently I have been preaching now for a period of about twenty years that those who are desirous of removing untouchability and the status of untouchables, but to become Muslims and I made those communities also accept the idea. In Kerala (Travancore and Cochin) too, from 1924 to 1925 I preached among the Malayali Ezhavas and the other so-called Untouchables and made them accept this. Having agreed to this and passing resolutions to that effect in their conferences, about a total of 200 or 3000 people here and about 600 or 700 in Kerala have embraced Islam and since then their degenerate status gradually being removed, rights being granted, the situation is successful, nearing even to the solution of their problem. The right to enter temples in Trivandrum and the right to proportionate representation in Cochin came about due to what, Islam or Hindu dharma?(p. 21).

Next, even in those days, Mohammad Nabi had forcefully condemned idol-worship. On this he was quite insistent: "Muslims should not worship idols, anyone who does so worship is not a Muslim at all". To such an extent he condemned idol-worship that he has made his followers also hate it. This also is a highly praiseworthy and appreciable thing, besides being a great teaching for our people to follow, I would say.

Apart from these things, Mohammad Nabi has said one more important thing. Among his teachings, attention is to be paid in particular to this, what he has said is this: In whatever I have said, if you have any doubt, investigate the matter using your own reasoning. (p.24)

Gandhi as racist: S. African writer exposes hidden face of "mahatma"

I took History at school but what I recently learnt about M.K. Gandhi, 14 years after matric, makes me feel like asking for all my school fees. I am so angry. At any rate, I am glad that I now know what I know because wisdom remains better than all the silver and all the gold.

For long and many decades "Mahatma" Gandhi has been wrongly heralded as a champion of human rights, racial harmony and justice. His name is often mentioned in the same breath as Rev. Martin Luther King and Dr. Nelson Mandela, as though he shared these mens' values. Although Gandhi received international praise for his much-publicised fasts and passive resistance campaigns, the world seems to have missed the true Gandhi.

The South African liberation movements, White Liberals, Hollywood, the US Left along with their respective intellectuals were not only unable to expose the real Gandhi, but are also largely to blame for the posthumous bravado that he now enjoys. He himself a great deceiver, deceiving many Black revival rights movement leaders who continue to honour him. Although the two never met, Dr. King and his wife Coretta went to India on a Gandhi bandwagon and neither they and nor their astute delegation came away none the wiser about the real Mahatma. Had they, imagine the shock, the shame of realising that the man and banner you took to the mountain tops had long betrayed you. But Gandhi, even in death continues to disarm and charm them all.

The truth that has been hidden for so long is that Gandhi never saw the dignity and capacity to suffer of the Indian as being the same as that of the African under the apartheid regime. He failed to see African people as human beings. He said in effect when he was arrested once and placed in the same cell as Africans; humiliated by the error of his jailers he noted in his writings how "many of the Native prisoners are only one degree removed from the animal and often created rows and fought among themselves in their cells".

G.B. Singh, author of the book, Behind the Mask of Divinity, (DV April 16, 2005 p.28) wrote in a separate article titled, ‘Would the Real Gandhi Stand Up’, of the 21 years that Gandhi lived in South Africa, "one cannot help but discern that there is not a single Black person anywhere in any of the photos of Gandhi during that time.

With Black people in the great majority, there is no way that Gandhi had missed noticing them". Certainly Gandhi noticed us, the problem is that we were beneath him. For him, we Blacks were the "untouchables" of this land. Gandhi came to Africa already having organised in his shiny head and the reality he was poised to create, a place and life-station for dark skinned people.

G.B. Singh points to the sad fact that "only a few scholars are aware of this background". It is certainly sad that those who have known have not told. Someone who could have said something should have said something. Why has this truth been hidden behind a veil of deceptive secrecy? What was the motive in hiding the fact that "Mahatma" Gandhi really hated the people of this land. He even fought against us, enlisting many Indians to help him in 1906 as Sergeant -Major Gandhi.

Gandhi supported the separatist and racist policies on the apartheid govt. He said in a public meeting in Bombay in 1896 that theirs (Indians) was "one continued struggle against degradation sought to be inflicted upon us (Indians) by Europeans, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw kaffir, whose occupation is hunting and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife with, and then pass his life in indolence and nakedness."

Seduced and blinded by an apparent adopted British-Indian arrogance and a superiority complex fueled by a sinister support and justification of the Indian Hindu caste system. The caste or varna system as it is also sometimes referred to relegates the darkest skinned Indians to a life of forced humiliating service to their lighter skinned country women and men. The Untouchables or Dalits as they like to call themselves endure unspeakable discrimination and oppression. They number some 200 million and "official government statistics show that Dalits suffer more than 100,000 murders, arsons, and rapes annually”, wrote Larry Glassco of his trip to India last October in an article called 'Casteism Racism’. Drawing further parallels between the (plight) of the Dalits and struggle of Africans in America, Glassco pointed out that the plight of the Dalits in India was "remarkably close to that of Black Americans".

Because the Dalits are not racially different from the upper castes, casteism may not be racism by formal definition, but caste-based discrimination bears enough similarities in practice, in outcome, and in struggles to end it that it could well be considered a close cousin. Informed by religion and not race, the shudras, of which the Dalits are a part of, bear the closest resemblance to Africans and are also therefore forced to do the type of work that used to be reserved for us darkiest. "Dalits, like Blacks, are given jobs that others shun. Blacks formerly dominated among garbage haulers, Dalits today clean the nation’s latrines".

Further, "like Blacks, Dalits cannot be served in many restaurants; if they are served, it is in separate glasses and cups. Upper caste men have access to Dalit women, by force if necessary; but Dalit men dare not date or try to marry an upper-caste girl under pain of death and mutilitation by a lynch mob, like the sexual-based lynchings of US history, noted (Glassco).

Gandhi tried to recreate and duplicate a sort of caste racism here in South Africa, with Indians naturally at the top with Whites and us Africans grovelling at the bottom as usual. As such, Gandhi lunged himself head first into the souridge that was South African politics. Unwilling to transcend the trappings and shortcomings of the caste system, which are inherently divisive and racist.

Unwilling also to stand in solidarity with oppressed Africans in the land of their birth, Gandhi, as a widely respected and influential Indian leader set the stage and tone for Indian/African relations on the continent and African diaspora for decades to come. Indian/African relations over the decades have been parasitical and abusive exploding most dramatically in Idi Amins’ Uganda when he expelled 50,000 Indians and Pakistanis in 1972. Tensions have also on more than one occasion come to a head in our own Durban where Indian families were sent fleeing en mass leaving homes burning behind them.

You can cross any country and swim across any sea, you will find the attitude of the Indian towards the Africa as being the same; one of disdain.

The Mahatma expressed his views on the caste system at length in a journal called Nava Jivan in 1921. It was originally written in Gujarati and now recently translated into English. He minsed no words when he said:

"I believe that if Hindu society has been able to stand it is because it is founded on the caste system”. He further reiterated that; “these being my views I am opposed to all those who are out to destroy the caste system".

Gandhi’s legacy is a paradox. While it is true that he helped bring "independence" to India, it is highly contested especially in India that he brought freedom to his people. The view is that while he brought his country out of British colonial occupation, he himself then roped it into a more subtle and paralising bondage; Hindu casteism. What is happening to the Dalits is illegal by government decree even as it is widespread forcing many Dalits to offer armed defence.

Novelist and musician Beverley Nichols when he met Dr. Ambedkar during a visit to British India, the doctor told him that “Gandhi is the greatest enemy the untouchables have ever had in India.

Standing on the side of history, G.B. Singh also cautions:

"Gandhi's racism will incite a whole lot of controversy. Be that as it may, I am of the view that the facts speak for themselves. I have exhausted the last 18 years of my life critically analyzing these hidden documents, and I have no doubt that Gandhi harbored anti-Black views and forced his racial views on his fellow Indian countrymen while living in South Africa".

The irony of the Gandhi conspiracy is that while it may have been propagated by well meaning Indians from all persuasions and intent, supposedly in an effort to safeguard the futures of their children in a foreign continent; the consequence however of that conspiracy is being brought down as judge and yardstick for the same children that they were trying to protect. Indian youth stand to be most affected by this revelation. Further, the collective innocence of those who believed in the righteousness and integrity of Gandhi; even the divine in him, they too will be (altered). What Indian youth now have to reckon with is the fact that the Indian has no future in Africa that is separate from that of the Africans. The Gandhist tendency of attempting to create a satellite India in Africa with castes and all has no future in Africa. The Indian has to become an African in Africa. Gandhists and others who believed otherwise are now suffering a cultural shock.
